How to Teach Your Kids the USA States and Capitals

Something that all elementary-age kids will learn is the USA states and capitals. You might remember trying to memorize them for a big test at school. Kids sometimes struggle to learn the USA states and capitals, so you need some tips to make it easier for your child.

I've taught two of my kids, so far, their states and capitals. Here is what I did.

6 Ways to Teach the USA States and Capitals

1. Break The States into Regions

Whatever you do, don't toss the entire USA map at your child and expect them to learn it all. It's intimidating! That's 50 states and 50 corresponding capitals. The worse thing that you can do is give them the entire map and expect them to learn it by a set time. 

Try working in small regions or chunks of states. Don't exceed more than 10 states at a time. During that time, focus on what makes that region unique and different than the rest of the United States. 

2. Learn about Each State

All states have a unique state bird, tree, and flag. You can take the time to look at each state, and see if you can find something cool about each one.

Examine each state. You might want to look at a busy city, a food that they're known for the most, or whatever you think is the most interesting that the kids will think is cool too. 

3. Sing Silly Songs

Many kids find that singing and memorizing songs makes it easier for kids to learn facts. YouTube has so many silly songs that list the states in alphabetical order along with their capital. The songs get stuck in your head; you'll find yourself singing them all the time. 

4. Color the State Map A Few Times 

Coloring is a good way for kids to relax while also still learning. You can purchase coloring books that have pages for each state, or just print out the USA map and have them color and label each state.

You also can grab a set of Placemats by merka. Leave these wipeable placemats on the table, and your child can see the states that you're learning during breakfast or lunch. 

5. Play Scrambled States of America

Kids learn well when they're playing games. That's why I suggest that you find as many educational games as you can for whatever subjects your child is learning. When kids don't feel under pressure, they relax, have fun, and learn. It's a win-win for everyone.

Try playing with this merka USA Flashcards. They are great to introduce the states, their location, the capitals, and the nicknames of the states. It's good for kids ages 8+ years old, but it can be adapted for non-readers as well. 

6. Assemble Puzzles of the USA States 

Everyone needs to have one or two wooden USA states puzzles. They're easy to assemble and offer a hands-on way for kids to memorize the states and capitals. Get your child a puzzle and encourage him to put it together once a day. It'll help your child connect the name of the states with their location.
