Teaching Your Children the Continents and Countries

Kids eventually need to learn the continents and countries, and that doesn't have to be as hard as you might think. Geography seems easier for little kids to learn than it is for adults to figure out. They're little sponges after all!

For little kids, they need this information given to them in small bitesize chunks. They can learn the seven continents over the course of a few days. Then, you can focus on the countries within each of those continents.

It sounds like it might be hard, but it's not. So, let's take a look at how to teach your children the continents and countries.

Teaching the Continents and Countries

1. Try a Song about the Continents

YouTube is your best friend. There are some awesome and catchy educational songs for kids to teach them about the continents.

My kids learned a basic, one-minute long song that taught them the name of each continent. I even catch my 10-year-old singing it when she needs to remember them all. It's a great and easy way to introduce all of the continents to your kids.

Here are the seven continents:

  • North America
  • South America
  • Asia
  • Europe
  • Africa
  • Australia
  • Antarctica

2. Use a Continental Puzzle

When my son was in a Montessori school, he learned his continents with a continental puzzle. I think it was so cool, which meant that I had to get one for our house.

Visual learning is also good for your kids, and Educational Posters are a great tool. This colorful learning aid material helps you introduce your kids some Geography by showing them the Continents and Countries. You can arrange any space at your home to look like a small class or even to decorate your kids room. Try these merka Educational Posters- Explorer Set that includes the World Map!

3. Try a Geography Coloring Mat

My kids love coloring, and the merka Coloring Mats "Map Set" has been our favorite. It helps little kids identify and locate different countries and continents around the world. There is a map that shows the names of the major cities. They can color the pictures with the erasable markers and identify each country.

4. Learn about Antarctica

Antarctica is unique because, not only does it not have countries, but also no humans live here except for a few scientific bases. That makes it particularly interesting for kids to learn about and explore.

Chances are your child has heard of the North Pole but never the South Pole. Lots of animals live in and around Antarctica. Take the time to teach your child about penguins, seals, whales, birds, and all of the animals around this amazing continent.

5. What is a Country?

Take a day to teach your children what is a country. It can be a bit of an abstract concept since borders are manmade, not physical.

Explain to your children that continents are divided up into smaller pieces called countries. Each country has different laws and some even have different languages.

You can adjust your lesson based on the age of your children. If you have an older child, you can discuss how each country has different governments and capital cities. Children who are old enough can learn and focus on the differences of each country.

6. Try a Few Countries on Each Continent

There are hundreds of countries available to learn, but it's nearly impossible for a little kid to learn them all. Instead, I suggest focusing on the most famous and well-known countries.

Some of the ones that your children might enjoy learning about include:

  • Ireland
  • United Kingdom
  • Spain
  • France
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Mexico
  • Chile
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • India
  • Turkey
  • Egypt
  • South Africa
Of course, the list can go on and on. For each country, take some time to learn about the culture of the people who live there and perhaps cook one of their favorite dishes. The more you immerse yourself into the learning of each country, the more interested your children will be.
