5 Thanksgiving Books for Your Young Kids

Thanksgiving isn't too far off in the future, and reading Thanksgiving books to your children is a great way to teach them about the meaning of this holiday.

Thanksgiving is more than just eating a lot of good food, even though we all love that part. It's a vital part of American history, and our children must understand the importance of this event. From the time that my kids are little, we study and learn about the history of Thanksgiving.

Over the years, I've read dozens of books with my kids, and I wanted to share my favorite choices.

If you're studying the history of Thanksgiving, then you need to read about Squanto. He welcomed the new settlers and taught them how to survive in the new world. Then, with Squanto's help, the people feasted together with the Native Americans, which is the tradition we celebrate hundreds of years later.

2. The First Thanksgiving - a Picture Puffins Book

The author, Jean Craighead George, traced the passage of time from the melting of the glaciers that created the Cape Cod area to when the Pilgrims and Pawtuxet Native Americans feasted together. This book gives a detailed account of the history of our Thanksgiving for young readers.

3. The Pilgrim’s First Thanksgiving

Ann McGovern takes readers through the voyage of The Mayflower and all of the hardships that the pilgrims faced during their first year in the New World. This book gives a fantastic recount of their first harvest and has some of the best illustrations.
